ISS Earth Day Social Media Filter

Description:

A fun camera filter that puts the user into the Cupola aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Watch as the Earth below you rushes by. The filter features two video backgrounds that the user can toggle between by tapping the screen.

It was released as part of NASA’s 50th anniversary of Earth Day celebration. Part of the celebration included NASA taking over the official Instagram account. The filter was used in Instagram Stories from both the ISS and NASA accounts, as well as being on the official Instagram account Story. The filter was even used by some astronauts (some links below). The filter recieved over 3 million interactions on Earth Day (combined story views, post views, and opens in the camera). As of late September 2020 the filter has been interacted with over 10 million times.

My Role:

A few weeks before Earth Day 2020, my lab was approached by the International Space Station (ISS) educational out reach team about creating a fun Instagram filter for the official ISS Instagram account. I had the privilege to be assigned the task. I worked closely with the customers in order to give them exactly what they were wanting. I used Spark AR to create the filter with the art assets that they had given me. Despite a rather tight deadline I was able to deliver a filter that they loved and was on time too.

Where to Find:

The filter can be found by going to the ISS Instagram account. Following them should add the filter to your filter list when you go the camera in Instagram. Instead of following them you can also just go to their account and press the filter button (its a smiley face with little pluses coming off of it) directly above the post section of the UI.
